I am a television producer and I am planning on taking a cross-country trip in August. I would like to compose a piece on this trip that documents Americana and highlights certain regions. Overall, the goal of the project would be to produce a piece that shows the eclectic nature of America. I would shoot the piece over a two week period and then work in post-production for approximately a month.

Does anyone know of any grants that might support this type of project?

I know that there are a lot of grant programs for filmmakers. And if you're a minority then the number of grant programs increases....but these grant programs are not all the same in their eligibility requirements. I have been involved with some that require that the film be on a certain subject, be filmed in a certain area, etc.......You also should know that the government isn't the only entity that has grant programs. Be sure to look at the different organizations and foundations that have grant programs too. Even some of the bigger for-profit businesses have grant programs. I talk about a few of the film-related grant programs that are out there on one of my pages.

And I'm also reminded of the client that got a $20,000 grant to start her own film company - that was a grant program for minorities - so you'll want to be looking for more than just film grants.
